First 10 women set sail at the beginning of Round the World

Today, S.V TravelEdge set sail on the first leg of eXXpedition Round the World. eXXpedition Plymouth to Azores with Rothy’s will see the multidisciplinary crew of women, which includes a police constable, documentary filmmaker, yoga instructor, archaeologist, students, activists, and businesswomen head out into rough seas following Hurricane Lorenzo. From 8 nationalities, the crew will be split into ‘watches’ who will work on a rota system to ensure the required sailing and citizen science will be completed, as well as everyday chores, such as cleaning and cooking.

Their first two days on board were action-packed with a welcome to the boat from the professional crew and eXXpedition Director Emily Penn, stowage of their personal belongings, introduction to S.V TravelEdge and important safety briefings.

As the majority of the women on board are not sailors, the current weather conditions will add to the challenge of crossing the Atlantic to the Azores. With approximately 9 days at sea, the expected arrival in the Azores will be on the 19th October 2019. The crew will then take part in local events in collaboration with our local partners, hosting an afternoon of talks and Q&A sessions at Expolab and joining the Government of Azores in community outreach at the local supermarket and visiting the Musami Waste Management facility. Find out more about these events below.

Join us for an afternoon with the women onboard our maiden voyage at Expolab as they share their firsthand experiences at sea and how they plan to use their unique skills to tackle the issue back on land.

Amongst our crew we have women from Indonesia, Croatia, Canada and Germany, with a diverse set of skills ranging from entrepreneurs to filmmakers and archeologists, and after their talks and Q&A session we will visit the interactive lab at Expolab to showcase some of the plastic samples we’ve collected throughout our research.

This event is open to the public, and is made possible thanks to the support from our local partners at the Governo de Açores and Expolab.
