The global population is expected to grow to 10bn The global population is expected to grow to 10bn by 2050, and 70% of these people will live in cities. The future of our planet, is, inevitably urban.

The @smartcityexpo brings together multidisciplinary change-makers to consider ways technology and solutions may be brought together to build more sustainable and inclusive futures.

Our Skipper, Emily Penn, was invited to speak at one of this year's panel discussions. From material innovation to sensor technology, the panel discussed the role of technology and society in the future of our ocean.

As Emily reminds us,"there are inspiring solutions (and people!) everywhere I look - let's adopt and scale across our cities and beyond".

What is your city doing to create change? Check out @jointheshift_ for some ideas to help your city on their path to reducing its plastic footprint.

We would like take the opportunity to offer a big We would like take the opportunity to offer a big thank you to @westmanatelier for their continued support of our mission at eXXpedition.

We have been talking a lot about hard-to-recycle plastics recently, and love the work @westmanatelier are doing with the Pact initiative.

The initiative encourages U.S. customers to mail in up to 10 empty beauty products per month (from any brand!) and Pact Collective will break it down responsibly - a great initiative working to close the loop on hard-to-recycle beauty packaging.

Head over to @westmanatelier to discover more about their cosmetic change-making journey.

If there was ever a success story to capture the r If there was ever a success story to capture the resilience of our planet’s natural world, it’s Redonda Island.

Check out our latest blog to read more about this Antiguan island's remarkable restoration journey, the role our friends at the Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) @eagantigua had on this journey, and the importance of our continued collaboration with the EAG, the Commonwealth and the Government of Antigua & Barbuda.

Our Co-Founder, Emily Penn, was recently invited to host a panel discussion with EAG Executive Director, Arica Hill, and Redonda Ecosystem reserve Co-ordinator, Johnella Bradshaw. The panel followed a private screening of “Redonda: The Road to Recovery'' – a captivating film that tells the story of Redonda’s remarkable rewilding and the collaboration that was so critical to its success– hosted by Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill, High Commissioner for Antigua & Barbuda - in London.

The Caribbean – and the EAG - have always been of special significance for us here at eXXpedition. We can't wait to see where Redonda, and the EAG, go next on their journey.

To keep track of Redonda’s progress, and learn more about the EAG’s fantastic conservation efforts follow @eagantigua on Instagram, or Twitter.

Happy to see that our friends @finisterre , are, o Happy to see that our friends @finisterre , are, once again, turning black friday blue!

Everyone should have equal access to the sea. Following on from their successful campaign last year, @finisterre will be donating £2 from every order placed over their Blue Friday weekend to Level Water, a UK charity providing specialist swimming lessons for children with disabilities.

Level Water provides swimming lessons to children with disabilities across the UK. They know swimming is a true leveller. The water takes your weight, it relieves pain and offers freedom and independence that many of our children never experience elsewhere.

Go blue rather than black this weekend and shop knowing your purchase is helping a child start their journey to the ocean when you get yourself to @finisterre ! #bluefriday

We're excited to announce that together with the U We're excited to announce that together with the University of Plymouth (@plymuni) and Mercator Ocean International (@mercator_ocean), we've released our second scientific paper from eXXpedition Round the World! The paper demonstrates how microplastic particles differ across the Atlantic Ocean.

The full study – Winnie Courtene-Jones (@_winniecj), Simon van Gennip, Juliette Penicaud, Emily Penn (@missemilypenn) Richard C.Thompson: Synthetic microplastic abundance and composition along a longitudinal gradient traversing the subtropical gyre in the North Atlantic Ocean – is published in Marine Pollution Bulletin and you can read more details on our blog #linkinbio.

The remarkable discovery from our research was the huge diversity of polymer types, particularly in the inshore regions. It tells us that the pollution has come from many different sources - be it clothing, paint fragments or car tyres - and as a result means the solutions need to be diverse too.

Our Round the World mission set out to pinpoint where the solutions to plastic pollution lie on land by better understanding the location the pollution had come from in the first place, but in fact the results just reinforce how much of an international challenge this is and the need to solve it together.

A huge thanks to all the study authors, scientific partners, advisory board, vessel crew, shore team and guest crew - particularly those on voyage legs 1-2 of #eXXpedition Round the World. Thanks also to all our fantastic sponsors who enabled this research, especially Travel Edge, TOMRA, SAP, Red Ensign Group, 11th Hour Racing and Slaughter and May.

By 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in th By 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.

To mark Oceans of Plastic Day 2022, we wanted to share a quote from our founder - Emily Penn:

"We need a multi-disciplinary and multicultural approach to solving the plastics problem. We all need to find our role and work together".

From individual to workplace, local community to entire nations, no matter who we are or where we come from, we each have a role in addressing the challenges our ocean faces.

How will you use your superpowers to create change?

Congratulations to ocean anthropologist and eXXped Congratulations to ocean anthropologist and eXXpedition Ambassador, Geraldine Le Roux, who took part in several panel discussions in Saint Malo a few weeks ago, to mark the beginning of the prestigious 2022 @route_du_rhum sailing race.

The race, now in full swing, sees sailors cross the Atlantic, single handedly, from Saint Malo to Guadeloupe, Caribbean.

Whilst at the festival, Geraldine was invited to take part in an opening panel event, speaking with 5 other panellists about the role of sailing in the fight against ocean plastic pollution. Geraldine spoke about her adventure with the Leg 8 crew at eXXpedition Round the World, as well as her award-winning book - Sea-Sisters. Un équipage féminin à l'épreuve de la pollution dans le Pacifique - and upcoming second book "L'art des ghostnets. Approche anthropologique et esthétique des filets-fantômes".

This year only 7/127 racers crossing the Atlantic are women. Geraldine also went live on TVR La Chaine @tvrlachaine with 3 other women in Saint Malo - brought together by Women For Sea - to discuss ways to encourage more women into sailing, and ocean activism. The programme was broadcasted on TVR La Chaine in collaboration with Ouest-France @ouestfrance on November 1st.

You can catch the episode by heading to our website’s media page!

It's great to see our Ambassadors spreading the word, and continuing to make an impact on land. Congratulations, and keep up the hard work Geraldine!

Three years ago our crew on board eXXpedition RTW Three years ago our crew on board eXXpedition RTW reached the Caribbean.

Alongside scientists at the University of Plymouth in conjunction with the University of Georgia, Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the Technological University of Panama, we set to work conducting the first holistic assessment of marine and land-based plastic pollution in the Southern Caribbean.

At the end of September, our Ambassador, Taylor Maddalene, presented our Caribbean Research Findings at the 7th International Marine Debris Conference in Busan.

Attended by academic, industrial, and governmental officials from around the world, it is great to see our Ambassadors continuing to make an impact back on land, and sharing our research on such international stages.

Didn't manage to catch Taylor in action?

Not to worry, follow the #LinkInBio to our website for the blog spotlighting the event.
