LEG 6 PANAMA TO THE GALAPAGOS WITH TRAVELEDGE

Our Leg 6 crew has been out at sea onboard SV TravelEdge for almost a week, sailing from Panama to the famous Galapagos archipelago. Here’s some of their thoughts on the plastic pollution they’ve seen so far…

“We are 400 nm away from land, we haven’t seen another boat in days and yet for hours and hours, large litter, bottles, cups and barrels were just floating past, one after another. where have they come from? At first i thought it was a lost container, but now I am not so sure. We must do better to stop this.”

“Yesterday we found 40 microplastics in just one trawl. It’s a beautiful ocean, so incredibly vast, and throw a trawl in anywhere and you will find all these microplastics, it’s just so sad.”

– Alexa Schindel

“Some of the large floating litter items had teeth marks in them, something could be eating them.”

“We are heading to one of the most pristine and diverse parts of the planet, the Galapagos, along with the amazing dolphins and seabirds we’ve been seeing on this journey – we find all these large floating plastics and microplastics in the water. It’s a strange paradox.”
