Job Role: Communications Assistant

eXXpedition is on a mission to help people understand the true ocean plastic and toxic pollution problem, so they can use their skills to solve it from sea to source. For eight years we’ve taken all-women crews on research voyages, engaged thousands of media channels, built an online social community, and established relationships with hundreds of partners to support and amplify our work – using our platform to inform and educate so that people can better understand the real problem of microplastics and use that to shape actions and solutions.

Having recently completed our ‘Round the World’ project, eXXpedition is moving into a new phase and seeks an enthusiastic, talented and ambitious communications assistant to work with us to create and share engaging content to communicate our activities and impact.

Location: Remote, but within reach of South West London for regular in-person team meetings
Salary: Approx £27,500pa
Start date: ASAP
Time commitment: Full-time

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, create and manage social media across @eXXpedition and @jointheSHiFT channels
  • Create content to share our work, activities and impact, such as:
    • Graphic asset creation and image selection for social media, website, events and the SHiFT platform
    • Written content eg. blogs and interviews
    • Infographics for science communications
    • Community newsletters
    • Presentation slides & educational resources
  • Manage website and intranet updates and the eXXpedition media archive
  • Media monitoring and documenting coverage
  • Attending eXXpedition events (virtual/physical) to document and share with the community
  • Support Director and Head of Communications across broad communications projects

About you

  • Cheerful, proactive, ‘can do’ attitude
  • A passionate communicator wanting to use their skills to help tackle ocean pollution 
  • An organiser who knows how to plan, prioritise and juggle multiple projects within a small team environment 
  • A creator who can spot opportunities and deliver on them
  • A great writer for newsletters, blogs and web copy (in English)
  • Eye for design in sourcing images and creating graphics
  • Ability to work virtually in collaboration with our dispersed team, as well work autonomously and proactively
  • Experience using social media accounts on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter for work (planning, creating content, posting, engaging, reporting)
  • Experience using WordPress 
  • Experience using Google Drive and Google software (docs, sheets, slides)
  • Experience using newsletter software, such as SendinBlue
  • Experience using graphic design tools such as Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
  • Demonstrable knowledge of plastic pollution and ocean health
  • A UK resident or with existing visa/permission to work in the UK
