We’re delighted to announce that luxury shoe designer Nicholas Kirkwood will support eXXpedition’s mission through their 1% for the Planet donation in 2021.

At eXXpedition our mantra that there’s no silver bullet to tackle ocean plastics couldn’t be truer. What’s needed is an engaged and empowered mix of people approaching the issue from all angles bringing different skills and expertise to turn awareness into action.

And that’s exactly what Nicholas Kirkwood is working towards with his journey to create the first biodegradable luxury shoe.

Nicholas Kirkwood’s designs are defined by daring innovation in the use of unconventional materials and techniques that marry high craft and tradition with the cutting edge of technology and the unexpected. The team embarked on a journey towards sustainability in recent years, achieving a series of unprecedented improvements in the field of luxury footwear.

In particular, they’ve been looking at the ocean from a different perspective, examining the beauty of its natural resources and how they can be integrated into their collections.

To celebrate World Ocean Day Nicholas Kirkwood will launch a capsule collection featuring the Casati Knot Sandal with boat-inspired knotted ropes made from PYRATEX® cosmetic VI. PYRATEX® cosmetic VI is a new fabric made of crushed, ground seaweed and eucalyptus wood cellulose. It is a 100% organic fiber, free of toxins, completely biodegradable, carbon neutral, and OEKO-Tex® 100 certified, with amino acids, vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for the skin.

His team explained to us that the seaweed used is harvested in a selective sustainable process from the fjords in Iceland, in locations with no waste or pollution from ship traffic. The process is gentle, using blades that do not cause damage, that only remove the part of the seaweed that regenerates.

Check out the new collection that’s available exclusively at FarFetch and NicholasKirkwood.com.
