Mauritius to Cape Town

Leg 17

*** THIS VOYAGE WAS CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19. FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE VISIT HERE ***

The island nation of Mauritius is surrounded by more than 150km of white sandy beaches and the world’s third largest coral reef. This provides a strong connection between the islanders and the sea, resulting in this location being a great place for us to explore the issue of plastic pollution and marine debris on an island-scale. We will then sail 140 nautical miles towards Reunion Island, where we will stop off to carry out some onshore research and outreach before continuing our journey to Cape Town. The passage between Reunion and Cape Town covers 2,300 nautical miles and is a technically challenging sail, so make sure you have your sea legs at the ready! When at sea we continue with our science programme and workshops on board, and will aim to transect the western side of the Indian Ocean Gyre. As we head around Cape Point into the Atlantic Ocean, we will be treated to the stunning view of the iconic Table Mountain as we approach Cape Town. Here we will step ashore to share our findings and raise awareness with the local community.
